In the United States, more than 20% of the women in menopause are diagnosed with hypothyroidism - a sluggish thyroid. Women need to understand the consequences of menopause on the thyroid, as with the increase in age, more women are affected by hypothyroidism. Menopause and hypothyroidism have common symptoms, such as depressed mood, decreased energy and decreased memory, among others. Often these symptoms are taken to be due to menopause, leading to delayed diagnosis of hypothyroidism.

Hormones in women’s bodies are balanced delicately and hormonal imbalance occurs during pregnancy, perimenopause, and menopause. In the time leading up to menopause, the clockwork menstrual cycles may begin to become erratic. This could be because of highs and lows in estrogen and progesterone.

Hypothyroidism, which is seven times more often associated with women than with men, also occurs because of hormonal imbalance. Certain doctors feel that estrogen dominance - excess of estrogen combined with low progesterone - typically occurs in early perimenopause. They feel restricting estrogen dominance prevents complications in perimenopause, including hypothyroidism. In fact, estrogen is required to be counterbalanced with progesterone to avoid hypothyroidism.

Treatment Options of Hypothyroidism

Hypothyroidism - the under-active thyroid is primarily due to the underproduction of the thyroid’s main hormone - Thyroxine (T4). This hormone has to be converted to the active thyroid - the Triiodothyronine (T3), by the liver. Then only it can be effectively utilized by the body. Different practitioners have their own ways of tackling hypothyroidism.

Most prescribe Synthroid, Levoxyl or Levothyroxine - the synthetic T4 - for hypothyroidism. This is fine, if women are capable of converting this T4 into T3. For others, who are poor converters, Cytomel - a synthetic T3 - is prescribed to covert their low T3.

Many women do not believe in synthetic hormones for treating their hypothyroidism, and relieve their symptoms with nutrition, exercise, stress-relieving techniques and such natural treatments. Rich nutrition is the basis of hormonal balance. Rich nutrition should consists of:

	Multivitamins and/or minerals

	Essential fatty acids

	Calcium and/or magnesium

Such essential nutrients, when supplementing a healthy eating plan, support the body’s endocrine, immune and other vital systems.

Some doctors recommend using a progesterone cream for treatment of hypothyroidism. Progesterone, which is essential for building many of your body’s most important hormones, is also vital in offsetting estrogen dominance, which is one of the most common conditions in perimenopause and hypothyroidism. Application of progesterone cream gives an immediate relief to the symptoms of hypothyroidism.

Women in menopause or perimenopause are required to massage about half a teaspoon of progesterone cream into their hands and body. It is advisable to use twice daily for 21 days, to discontinue for 7 days, and repeat the procedure. The cream is required to be massaged on the thighs, stomach, inner arms, and the buttocks. It is recommended that you increase your water intake to avoid dehydration.

Many doctors recommend against prolonged use of progesterone cream after menopause. Short-term use is recommended after menopause, especially when weaning off Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT).

Today there could be several reasons as to why you may be starting to lose your hair even if you are young. Certainly, one of the most common reasons is because of hormonal changes taking place in your body. Whilst others could be because you do not have sufficient nutrients in your diet or you are under extreme amounts of stress (mental and physical). Finally, it could be because you have some underlying medical condition that you do not know about. One particular condition which seems to be an underlying cause for hair loss is the thyroid gland malfunctioning.
In this article, we explain a bit about the way in which thyroid problems can affect the growth of a person’s hair. In addition, we also look at ways of tackling any kind of hair loss that is associated with such medical problems.
Anyone who suffers from either hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism has a much greater chance of losing his or her hair. The simple reason for this is that the hormonal changes taking place in their bodies cause the process of hair regrowth to either slow down or stop altogether.
This is because when a person’s thyroid begins to malfunction it forces the hair follicles to remain in the dormant phase of the hair growth process for much longer than normal. This in turn results in growth of new hair being halted and so leads to the person eventually starting to lose their hair.
However, there are a number of things a person can do which will help them tackle this problem should they suffer from it. Below we offer a number of tips, which can help you tackle this kind of hair loss problem.
Tip 1 - Before you start any course of treatment in order to rectify your hair loss problem you should first get the right diagnosis for what is the cause. It is best if you arrange an appointment with your doctor, a dermatologist or a hair loss expert, as they will be able to carry out tests to find out what the underlying cause is.
Tip 2 - If you do have a thyroid problem then it may well be down to the drugs you are taking to replace the thyroid hormone that you are deficient in. Certain thyroid drugs, such as Synthroid, can lead to excessive hair loss in a person as one of its possible side effects.
Not only have we provided you with an explanation as to what the connection between hair loss and thyroid problems, but we have also shown you a number of things that you can do which may help to prevent your hair loss problem from becoming any worse than it currently is.

Hypothyroidism, a condition where the body is not producing enough levels of thyroid hormone, can cause fatigue, weight gain, hair loss, depression, memory loss and a host of other symptoms. Often, hormone treatments are necessary and when it comes to prescription medicine, Synthroid is one of the most popular drugs prescribed. But what about natural remedies for hypothyroidism?
There are a number of natural ways to treat hypothyroid conditions. For instance, Kelp is one of the most popularly used for thyroid conditions. This plant is also known as rockweed.
Kelp and Thyroid
Kelp benefits come from the multiple nutrients it contains. This seaweed is packed with more than 60 minerals, elements and amino acids. But one of the key elements in kelp and, which makes it perfect for treating hypothyroidism, is iodine. Iodine is required by the body to form thyroid hormone. What’s more… Kelp has long been used as a treatment for hypothyroidism, even before it was understood that the iodine played a role. This seaweed may also be helpful for encouraging weight loss and treating low blood pressure, goiters and fatigue, all of which may be caused by a sluggish thyroid.
Kelp has become a popular ingredient used in most herbal formulas for hypothyroidism. But did you know that kelp can also be eaten in soups or salads? If you like to try kelp, soak it for an hour in water before chopping it and then add it to a salad. This will tenderize it and you’ll be able to enjoy it as you should.
Bite-sized pieces of kelp can also be roasted for a few minutes in the oven and made into a crunchy, salty snack.
Is it Kelp good for every single hypothyroid person?
When using kelp or any other seaweed containing iodine - or a natural product containing Kelp - it is important to know if you are iodine deficient. Learn why this is key and find out how you can easily determine if your system is low in iodine by visiting kelp benefits and the thyroid gland.

Goiter is an enlargement of the thyroid gland. The thyroid gland is a small gland located in the neck, below your Adams apple. The thyroid can be enlarged due to generalized enlargement of the thyroid or nodules (tissue growths) within the thyroid. The thyroid gland produces the hormones thyroxine (also called T4) and a small amount of triiodothyronine (also called T3). Most of the T4 is converted to T3 outside of the thyroid.
There are different kinds of goiters. A simple goiter usually occurs when the thyroid gland is not able to produce enough thyroid hormone to meet the body’s needs. The thyroid gland makes up for this by becoming larger, which usually overcomes mild deficiencies of thyroid hormone. A simple goiter may be classified as either an endemic (colloid) goiter or a sporadic (nontoxic) goiter.Endemic goiters occur within groups of people living in geographical areas with iodine-depleted soil, usually regions away from the sea coast. Colloid nodular goiters tend to occur in certain geographical areas with iodine-depleted soil, usually areas away from the sea coast. An area is defined as endemic for goiter if more than 10 % of children aged 6 to 12 have goiters.Certain things in the environment may also cause thyroid enlargement. Small- to moderate-sized goiters are relatively common in the United States. The Great Lakes, Midwest, and Intermountain regions were once known as the “goiter belt.” The presence of an enlarged goiter usually means that the thyroid gland is not functioning normally. Causes of a goiter include an imbalance in the thyroid gland and Goiter symptoms generally occur in a gland that is overactive, producing too much hormone (hyperthyroidism), or that is underactive, producing too little hormone (hypothyroidism). Causes There are various types and causes of goiter. In underdeveloped parts of the world, it is often brought on by a lack of iodine in the diet. Iodine—found in fish products, drinking water and table salt—is essential for the production of thyroid hormone. Without it, the gland enlarges in an attempt to increase the output of the hormone. The World Health Organization estimates that 750 million people still suffer from this problem, earning it the name endemic goiter. Take Iodine in its organic form. Eat foods like turnips, carrots, garlic, pineapples, whole rice, tomatoes, watercress, strawberries, guavas, lettuce, onions, oats, citrus fruits, egg yolks, seafoods, etc should be taken in ample amounts. Treatment Nontoxic goiters usually grow very slowly and may not cause any symptoms, and thus may not require treatment. However, if the goiter grows rapidly, or you have symptoms that affect your neck or obstruct your breathing functions, treatment may be required. If a nontoxic goiter progresses to the nodular stage, and the nodule is found to be cancerous, you will need treatment. Medications. If you have hypothyroidism, thyroid hormone replacement with levothyroxine (Levothroid, Synthroid) will resolve the symptoms of hypothyroidism as well as slow the release of thyroid-stimulating hormone from your pituitary gland, often decreasing the size of the goiter. For an inflammation of your thyroid gland, your doctor may suggest aspirin or a corticosteroid medication to treat the inflammation. For goiters associated with hyperthyroidism, you may need medications to normalize hormone levels.

Iodine is important for the production of thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH). It is in most foods that we eat such as diary products, fish and including iodized table salt. When there is an insuffienct amount of this important mineral in our blood stream it can cause hypothyroidism. Iodine deficiency is the number one cause of primary hypothyroidism and goiter on a worldwide basis, but this is one cause of the disease that is a hundred percent treatable.
Studies have shown that in countries like Japan, it is extremely rare to see hypothyroidism. They theorize that because their diets consist of iodine rich foods like seaweed and sea salt and that they are receiving enough of this mineral in their systems to prevent this disease. With people being more health conscience, they are limiting certain foods and salt intake. Research has indicated that by doing this, it is leaving them vulnerable to a under active thyroid.
There are other causes of an inactive thyroid so taking iodine is not always the answer. It is crucial that you consult your physician on everything you take, including supplements that contain this mineral. Only your doctor can advise on whether you should increase your iodine intake. When he or she prescribes this mineral to you, you will be monitored very closely through TSH and other blood tests. Good sources of iodine is kelp, seafood, eggs, and diary products.
